Dense, short, yellowish brown fur covers its body, helping it to blend in with volcanic soil. It has short, rounded ears, and its short tail becomes hidden in adulthood. The volcano rabbit has a highly restricted habitat, being found only on the slopes of four volcanoes to the southeast of Mexico City.
